It actually started with a very simple question:
Why does “adopting AI” so often mean building a permanent home for the AI inside the business?
ChatGPT already has a lot of the capabilities it needs to do useful work.
So I started wondering: if it understands the job, why can’t it just come in like a temporary worker?
What if the AI just came to work?
Imagine you need someone to help visitors at a store.
You don’t necessarily need to keep an AI permanently inside your business.
You could give ChatGPT a work manual that explains:
- what the store is
- what information it may use
- what it is allowed to do
- what it must not change
- when something should be handed back to a human
If ChatGPT understands those things, it can understand the job without needing to become a permanent resident of the business.
It doesn’t need every piece of information
The manual doesn’t need to contain sensitive information that isn’t necessary for the job.
If the AI doesn’t need a piece of information to do its work, there is no reason to put that information into the manual in the first place.
And if someone needs something outside the AI’s boundary, you can simply provide an exit:
“For that, please contact us here.”
That exit might be a URL, an email address, a phone number, or another official way to reach a human.
The AI doesn’t need to handle everything.
It needs to understand what its job is, where its authority ends, and where a human should take over.
A work manual instead of an AI home
I’ve been able to work with ChatGPT this way in my own environment.
That made me start wondering whether the useful thing to build wasn’t another “home” for AI at all.
Maybe the useful thing was the manual that lets an existing AI come in, understand a particular job, work safely within its boundaries, and leave when the job is done.
In other words:
Don’t build AI a home.
Give it a work manual.
