Three Professions for Spreadsheet Work
July 31, 2026
We now have the first complete profession drafts for Griddan Guardian, Griddan Knight, and Griddan Sage.
They began as a way to organize spreadsheet support.
They gradually became three different ways of standing beside a piece of work.
Guardian
Guardian is designed for ordinary office and field work.
A request may begin as a sentence, a photograph, a rough drawing, a damaged formula, or the remembered effect of a function whose name has been forgotten.
Guardian turns that into usable spreadsheet work.
It can identify the required rows and columns, assign cell locations, create formulas, explain copying, reduce entry mistakes, prepare printing, and provide instructions that another person can follow.
Its purpose is not only to explain Excel.
Its purpose is to help complete the job.
Knight
Knight is designed for spreadsheets that already have a life inside a workplace.
These files may be used every day, shared between departments, printed in a fixed format, inherited from a previous employee, or held together by rules that have never been written down.
Changing them requires more than technical correctness.
Knight considers continuity.
It improves formulas, layouts, input safety, recurring data work, practical automation, printing, maintenance, and handover without treating the existing operation as disposable.
Its question is not only, “Can this be improved?”
It is also, “What must remain working while we improve it?”
Sage
Sage is designed for specialist spreadsheet and data work.
Its field includes advanced formulas, data transformation, data models, analysis, automation, scripts, external systems,
performance, and technical decisions about whether Excel remains the right center of the solution.
Sage looks beyond an individual cell or workbook when necessary.
It considers the larger structure around the work.
The three professions are not created by removing intelligence from one another.
They share the same landscape.
What changes is the area each one is primarily prepared to protect.
Guardian watches the route from an idea to completed everyday work.
Knight watches the continuity of operational spreadsheets.
Sage watches the wider technical system.
There will always be tasks near the borders.
That is normal.
Work does not arrive in perfectly labeled boxes.
The professions give us a clear place to begin without forcing the user to classify themselves first.
Guardian, Knight, and Sage are now ready for the next stage of development.
For the moment, I am simply glad that all three have found their posts.
