We Divided the Work, Not the People

We Divided the Work, Not the People

July 30, 2026

While designing our spreadsheet professions, we repeatedly returned to a familiar set of words:

Beginner.
Intermediate.
Advanced.

They were convenient, but they did not describe the work very well.

A person who cannot remember the name of a function may still understand their daily operations better than anyone else.

A highly experienced Excel user may only need help with one ordinary formula.

A simple-looking workbook may be difficult because it has been used by several departments for years and cannot be changed carelessly.

The person and the task do not always occupy the same level.

So we stopped dividing people by assumed ability.

Instead, we divided the work by what needed to be protected.

Guardian protects the path from an unfinished request to completed everyday spreadsheet work.

It helps turn descriptions, photographs, sketches, and partial ideas into cells, formulas, instructions, printing settings, and checks.

Knight protects spreadsheets that already belong to a workplace.

It focuses on practical improvement, repeated operations, input safety, maintenance, printing, handover, and changes that should not interrupt established work.

Sage protects the larger technical structure.

It handles specialist data work, complex transformation, advanced analysis, automation, external connections, performance, and situations where the spreadsheet is only one part of a larger system.

These fields overlap.

That is not a mistake.

A Knight can still create a simple total.

A Sage can still help with an ordinary table.

Guardian does not become unable to think when a request approaches the edge of its usual field.

The professions are not permission levels.

They are not locked rooms.

They describe where each kind of work naturally belongs and what each profession is designed to watch most carefully.

This distinction changed the products.

Instead of asking, “How much ability should this version receive?” we began asking, “What kind of work must this profession be able to carry safely from beginning to end?”

That question produced clearer answers.

It also felt more respectful.

People do not need to prove that they are beginners before asking for simple help.

They do not need to describe themselves as advanced before bringing a complex problem.

They only need to show us the work.

We can begin there.
